I think it has more to do with the quality of the image rather than the tattoo itself being faded.
Anyhow there is a certain quality about faded tattoos particularly if they are on some ol' salty sea faring dog or some slapper past her best ;-)

I love nautical star tattoos. We all get lost from time to time and it helps to have some signage or symbolism to guide us back on track.
Maybe its also a reminder that you need to be lost in order to get found or better still find yourself.
