NZ Tattoo Artist Nadine Bryant Uncovered!

Nadine Bryant of Skinks Tattoos is one of New Zealand's most awarded artists with 16 years professional tattooing experience. She will be appearing at this years Melbourne Tattoo Convention 2006. In this short interview she lets us know how she started as a tattoo artist and how she operates!

Give us the inside dope on Skinks Studio!

Skinks was formed 10 years ago after moving to NZ from the UK. I wanted to set up a friendly studio that was easy for someone getting their first tattoo to feel they could come in without feeling too intimidated. So the studio is fairly open and very light, ground floor level for our clients with disabilities. We offer a free design service so we dont have to have the shop full of flash, that allows the customer a little more scope in getting what they want.

What made you decide to become a tattoo artist?

I decided to approach a local tattoo studio in the UK after studying art at school and drawing alot of tattoos for friends. At first I was turned away but persisted and eventually became such a nuisance that was given a position as coffee maker / floor cleaner. That fast became head needle maker and tattoo designer. I finanlly got the opportunity to start tattooing and loved it. I havent looked back since.

Like most artists apprenitices I started with the smaller easier stuff. Back then we did everything with a single outline and I remember being told that if you couldnt do a decent single needle outline then I didnt deserve to colour it. I think that really helped progress my art and I love doing single needle work now. I remember seeing a back piece at an early Dunstable convention by Ian of Reading that made me think 'man one day I'm gonna be that good'. Since then I have admired the work of Tom Renshaw, his wildlfe kicks arse. Love Stephane C for the freaky shit and of course Paul Booth for the wonderful texture of black and grey.

What is your favorite style?

I love doing portraits, that's probably my favourite thing to do, but I love tattooing so anything is cool with me.

What advice would you give to up-and-coming artists?

Advice for up coming artists, mmmmm, don't let anyone tell you can't do something, that's how new styles and methods are found and how you can find your niche. Work hard and keep at it, it takes a while to learn the ropes and only dedication will get you there. Treat your clients with respect and have fun.

Hit me with your funniest tattoo story!

I can't think of any funny stories off the top of my head, oh I remember one I was told. It was a client that was in a wheel chair and on oxygen tanks for her disbility. She was set up for a tattoo on her back and facing away from the artist. As the tattoo progressed the lady started to lean forward more and more. The tattoo artist became a little concerned that she was fainting and asked if she was ok. As he leant forward he realised that he had been standing on her oxygen line. Yes I have a warped sense of humour and the lady was fine.
