Ta moko / Maori and religious inspired tattoo
First off, my mum's part Maori from New Zealand (Belfast, South Island) so I'm not an ass for having this done. I fully agree with your site about those getting Moko done without knowing the meaning.
The bat element is religious - as a Pagan the bat is my power animal/ guardian. There are three Maori symbols, three being my power number.
The symbols (left to right) are chosen by my interpretation of them;
Koro - spirals, cycles of life.
Hei Matau - for safe travel over water. I live in the US so I'm a kiwi transplant.
Hei Tiki - representative of the female. As I'm now a mother this is all the more powerful.
This is my first tattoo ever and it was done the day of my 18th birthday. It took about two months to plan and 9 hours to complete (there's a lot of black!).
The artist is Dave Mosley of 'Big River Tattoo and Body Piercing'.
