Mel Watson on Tattoos Tattoos, Music and Life... Mel Watson - member of the band Fruit - a 5 piece harmony based alt pop band from Adelaide shares her experiences on life and tattoos. Fruit are hailed by some as one of Australia 's best kept secrets and acclaimed internationally as one of the greatest unsigned acts. Below is an interview with Mel Watson about her tattoos. When did you get your first tattoo and what inspired you to get it done? I got my first tattoo when I was 17 or 18, I wanted to express in someway the yin and yang energy and my own awareness of that energy in my life. It is a tattoo that acknowledges both forces working in my life, in all life. I was looking for balance and acceptance of self. This tattoo is a book mark. Can you describe your tattoos and what they mean to you? In addition to my first tattoo featuring the yin/ yang symbol and a dancing woman and man, my right arm is covered in sunflowers, I have peace written on my right inside wrist, and a big fired up sun on my right shoulder. 99% of my sleeve was done by Fran at The Tattoo Gallery in Rundle street, Adelaide, South Australia. I've looked at other tattoo joints and I always come back to Fran, although i'm looking for an artist in seattle, my second home. My right sleeve is all about healing, a reminder that our tomorrows experience comes from seeds planted today. Sunflowers to me are one of natures truly joyous flowers, one that celebrates light. They make me smile when ever I see them. I am a touring musician spending 9 months on the road at a time. I rarely get to see sunflowers grow from seed to bloom, but I have my own traveling garden right on my arm. It is beautiful.
Any more tattoos plannned? Yes i'd like to get more flowers and bugs and maybe Jesus, Buddah, Allah, Krishna and and Mohammad having dinner together! Who/what inspires you the most? Nature, human spirit, animals. Have you had any defining moments in your life? 17,856,000 of them! I'll be 34 on the 1st of May at 5.07pm. What does the next 12 months hold? Well my band fruit will be touring quite a lot, we are releasing a new album which will be taking us around Australia and over to the US. Hopefully there will continue to be growth in my mind and my heart and peace oh sweet peace.
