first of all, if you cant read chinese or japanese, you shouldnt be commenting on the meaning of characters. second, it means quiet or peaceful.

Analyzing the characters by their components isn't always a good idea. The meaning is actually pretty close to what you were told ("rest" as in "a state of stillness" or "quietness" - it's not used as a verb, though).

Thanks for the advice. I was told it was suppose to be "be silent" then "be still".

...but the top looks like "peace" (not v well done - error in top stroke, I believe). The bottom left character looks like "sun/day" with something that looks a bit like "born" with a stroke missing (could just be a gap in my knowledge though). Bottom right looks a tiny bit like the character for "child" but really no idea as to meaning. What were you told it translated as?
