Julie on Tattoos

Crazy Girl Makes Good...

What is your background/lifestyle?

I currently work as a trainer for developmentaly disabled adults, but I am leaving the Bay Area to pursue my Master's degree in social work. In my "past life" I was a body piercer. I both owned my own shop in Texas from 1996-1997, and then worked at a series of piercing and tattoo shops here in the SF bay area.

Where did you get your tattoos done?

I have work from American Graffiti in Sacramento (by Eric Hogan - now deceased), 222 Tattoo (by Jeff Rashier now of Black Heart tattoo), Temple Tattoo (Freddy Corbin), Mom's Body Shop (Barnaby, Hawk), Everlasting (Henry Lewis), Al's Rock of Ages (Bill Henderson & George Hernandez, now both of Folsom City Ink).

Also Acme Ink in Louisville, KY, Black & Blue Tattoo (by Samantha Bliss, now in NY), Mao Y Cathy Tatuaje in Madrid (Adam Roach - no longer tattooing I think), Scorpian Studios (Clint Leifeste), Zebra Tattoo (Will), Marina Tattoo, plus some other random places around the country & world.

When did you start getting inked?

I recieved my first tattoo at age 17. It was after hours in a shop in Seaside, California. It was actually a huge disaster. It was meant to be a dragon, but the guy didn't know what he was doing and I didn't know what to expect either. He couldn't get the stencil to stay so I ended up drawing most of the piece on my chest.

Then he had no idea how to use a machine so the whole ordeal took about 10 hours (including breaks for him to do lines of speed) I had the piece coved later by something equally as bad. It is on my chest and it is really the only tattoo I have that I plan to remove.

What do your tattoos mean?

My tattoos had meaning in the begining, I have pieces that represent mother earth and the goddess. I even have a lotus on my mons pubis with the word goddess in it. My tank girl collage and a piece on a piercer juggling jewelry on my calf represent me. As I've gotten more tattoed however, I have begun to collect pieces that are aestheticaly pleasing.

Most of my sleeves consist of traditional and neo-traditional "sailor" tattos (Sailor Jerry pin up girls, stars, daggers with roses, swallows, etc.) My back piece is the result of a collaboration with the artist (Henry Lewis of Everlasting Tattoo in San Francisco). I gave him free lisence on most of it. It is in the style of Tamara de Lempika (an art deco artist)

The female nudes are a continuation of themes on the rest of my body, and the SF skline is representative of my background. I was born in Oakland, CA and grew up in the bay area. I have lived in SF for over 4 years.

Favorite artists?

Henry is definitely on of my favorite artists, I also like Grime, Scott Silvia, Jeff Rasier, Fredy Corbin. I have tattoos from a lot of artist I respect, but i have been out of the "tattoo life" for a couple years now so I'm a little out of touch on artists

Favorite hangouts?

Honestly I have become a bit of a homebody as of late, bit I enjoy Zeitgeist, Hemlock, The Pound for hardcore and punk shows. I also enjoy Yerba Buena Gardens for free summer concerts.
