Aug 21, 2006, Fake Maori tattoos withdrawn from sale

Appeals by a prominent Maori academic for an American store to stop selling fake Maori moko tattoos have been granted. Tattoo kits had been sold at Halloween Town's website until late last week. Rotorua academic Ngahihi o te ra Bidois emailed the Los Angeles based store to express his disappointment and to ask for sales of the fake tattoos to stop. The shop obviously had the respect to adhere to Maori culture with no sign of the tattoo kits on the store's website any longer.

Aug 10, 2006, Tattoos in Iran Remain Undercover...Literally!

Tattoos amongst the style conscious in Iran have become an undercover movement...literally! The demand for tattoos has exploded particularly amongst young Iranian women who proudly display their body art in private but must keep them under wraps from authorities. It has become a "tattoo generation," according to Milad, a 24-year-old tattoo artist who does body art as a sideline in his Tehran tattoo studio. He gave only his first name, fearing police might crack down.

It's a select, largely female clientele, mostly teens and 20-somethings in Tehran's most affluent and style-savvy districts. But these have been the birthplaces for nearly every limit-testing trend since the strict dress codes of the Islamic Revolution began to erode in the late 1990s. It began with nose jobs then moved on to makeovers, body-hugging jackets, funky sneakers and head scarves that leave more hair exposed than covered.

As the Islamic coverings shrink, the next fashion frontier appears to be what's underneath, and it's catching on with men, too. Officials don't yet seem to know what to do about this upsurge in the popularity of tattoos and are even starting to block access to tattoo Web sites according to a recent Associate Press report.

Aug 10, 2006, Maori's and Cultural Stereotyping

Maori's across New Zealand have been outraged by a researcher's "findings" claiming that the indigenous people have a high representation of a gene linked to aggression. This comes at a time that the nation is facing faces a domestic violence crisis according to Reuters.

A speaker told a genetics conference in Australia that Maori men were twice as likely as European men to carry monoamine oxidase, describing it as a "striking over-representation" of what has been described as the warrior gene.

Unsurprisingly the media reports of the findings have outraged Maori leaders who said they only reinforced "Once Were Warriors" cultural stereotypes, a reference to a harrowing 1994 movie about domestic violence in poor Maori families.

Lets not forget the social and environmental impact the same breed of people who prefer to have a refined afternoon tea and scones on the lawn have had!
